Academic Integrity and Paused Grading

If a student has an Academic Integrity issue and grading has been paused, follow the steps below to document the concern, contact the student, and keep the gradebook accurate.

Goal: Do not leave submissions in Submitted/Scoring Required or Missing status while waiting to connect with the student.

Overview

Keep the Gradebook Accurate While You Work to Connect

When an Academic Integrity issue is being addressed, the gradebook should still reflect a clear and accurate status for the student, family, and local school. Leaving submissions in Scoring Required status can artificially inflate the student's overall course grade. Leaving them flagged as Missing can also create confusion for students, families, and local schools.

Required Steps

What to Do When Grading Is Paused

Step 1

Enter Feedback

Enter feedback in the Grade Center explaining that you need to connect with the student about the submission.

Step 2

Contact the Student

Reach out to the student and ask for a conversation about the Academic Integrity concern.

Step 3

Wait Up to 48 Hours

If you are unable to connect with the student within 48 hours, update the gradebook so the submission does not remain unresolved.

Step 4

Enter Temporary 0s

Enter 0s for every assignment connected to the Academic Integrity issue until the conversation can happen.

Step 5

Update the Feedback

Revise the feedback so the student understands the 0 is temporary and knows to respond to your message.

Use This Feedback Language

Temporary 0 Feedback Message

“I have entered a temporary 0 until we are able to connect. Please respond to my message so we can set up a time to talk. Remember that my goal is to support your learning, so look at this as an opportunity, not a punishment.”

Important Reminder

Do not leave paused Academic Integrity submissions unresolved in the gradebook.

Use feedback, student communication, and temporary 0s to prevent confusion and keep the student’s course grade from being artificially inflated.
